Semester Three (January - May 2017)
We are our memory,
we are that chimerical museum of shifting shapes,
that pile of broken mirrors ~ Jorge Luis Borges, In Praise of Darkness
For my third and final semester, my work focuses on a personal collection of memories relived through the act of inscription. It is an attempt to write or rather, rewrite important aspects of one’s own life eroded by time.
You, examines the concept of Palimpsest as means to revisit and remember the past. It is an assemblage of memories pieced together of people, places and conversations that have succumbed to the vestiges of time. These memories are revisited through sketches comprising scribbles, scrawls, stain marks, rips and tears as a form of mark-making / inscription.
The act of inscription remains a key element in this final semester, as it was in the previous. Aspects of Intimacy and Isolation also remain important touchstones for my thesis. The yearning for Intimacy of time spent with loved ones, and the pain of Isolation upon realisation that certain people or situations no longer exist.
